Feb. 27, 2020 – The harms are in two basic buckets. There are the acute harms of alcohol because of what it does to our judgment and our cognition. Then there are the longitudinal harms because of what it does to our organ system.

Alcohol tolerance isn’t just a weight thing?

No. Even matched for size, men can tolerate more alcohol than women. And then there are significant ethnic variations. Famously a lot of ethnic Asians have a very low tolerance for alcohol, which simply means they have low levels of alcohol dehydrogenase.

So how much alcohol are we talking if I want to stay within the therapeutic threshold?

The prevailing average is one drink a day for women, two drinks a day for men. A “drink” is essentially one mixed drink, one beer, or one glass of wine.
